The Dead End Politics of Class Envy

It's August 2011 and the political airwaves are thick with the usual liberal rhetoric calling the rich to task for not contributing their fair share of the economic burden as the country struggles through the great recession.

Never mind that the fortunes of the rich, the middle class, and the poor rise and fall together. Never mind that confiscatory taxation aimed at the rich always and invariably hurts the middle class and the poor as well.

Noted blogger and Internet humorist Dave Burge, also known as Iowahawk, makes the point, with his usual acid wit, that there simply aren't enough rich people and big corporations to pay for all the big government largesse liberals are so passionately attached to. Starting with the baseline of $3.5 trillion in Federal spending for FY 2011, Iowahawk lays out in stark detail how even the systematic looting of all the wealth produced by the rich would not be enough to run the country for even a year.

And then what? After our self-righteous pillage consumes the upper classes and all they've created, the sun rises over a smoking field of economic ruin stretching as far as the eye can see, leaving us still, as always, with the need of clothing, feeding, and housing ourselves. But we'll have razed out of spite the single most effective means ever devised of doing so.
