At one time, Democrats could tell themselves that Hillary Clinton's email scandal was a big fat nothingburger — just another bogus conservative attack on a talented and worthy person who was also on track to become America's first female president. The whole tawdry little thing was bound to fade from public awareness.
Except it didn't fade. It has, instead, become more vivid with each passing day — to the point that criminal investigations are being seriously discussed in circles which are not Republican, and what was once thought of as the inevitable Hillary Rodham Coronation was starting to look like something that might not happen at all. In Democrat party politics this is the equivalent of a major tectonic shift. An earthquake. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been a Democrat mainstay for more than twenty years.
As to this current scandal, for too long, Democrats were content to accept her repeated explanations of her use of a private server while she ran the State Department. They believed such a potential security breach really and truly was just for her convenience, that she'd cc'd other State Department addresses to preserve “90 percent” of her correspondence, and no classified material was transmitted through unauthorized and unsecured channels. And if all that had really been true, Democrats might well have judged rightly — the storm would pass, as has always happened with every other scandal involving the Clintons, and the Coronation could proceed as planned.
But the steady accumulation of damning details has done Hillary serious damage, and promises to do more so. Read our extensive timeline below and you'll see exactly why she's in so much trouble.

Jim Jordan took issue with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's comment that protests had erupted in both Cairo, Egypt and Benghazi, Libya, citing evidence from the House Select Committee’s investigation stating that no protest of any kind had occurred in Benghazi. He then went on to quote from various State Department spokespersons who, in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2012 attack, claimed that the incident in Benghazi was linked to the Cairo-based protest, which was a reaction to an offensive online video. "Where'd the false narrative start? It started with you, Madame Secretary," said Jordan, adding that a statement released by Clinton the night of the attack suggests as much.

Her campaign claims that any classified information on Hillary's server was not so marked at the time (this is a red herring — meaningless to the applicable statutes). Two, while they admit to an investigation of the classified information on the server, they claim it's not an investigation of Hillary herself. As Jonah Goldberg writes at NRO, this is like saying you're investigating a car in a hit and run accident but not the driver.

Further, the Top Secret information in one of the e-mails consisted in part of “operational and geospatial intelligence from the CIA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), which produces satellite images.” Since then, McCullough has been denied further access to Hillary's documents. The State Department is now producing tranches of documents that Hillary turned over to the State Department on December 5, 2014, some with considerable redactions. Whether these redactions hide classified information relating to national security or foreign policy is unknown.

March 27, 2015 – When Did Hillary Delete Her Emails?(Politifact) Hillary's lawyer responds to Trey Gowdy. Says Politifact: “‘During the fall of 2014, Secretary Clinton's legal representative reviewed her firstname.lastname@example.org account for the time period from Jan. 21, 2009, through Feb. 1, 2013,’ Kendall wrote. ‘After the review was completed to identify and provide to the Department of State all of the secretary's work-related and potentially work-related emails, the secretary chose not to keep her non-record personal emails and asked that her account (which was no longer in active use) be set to retain only the most recent 60 days of email. No emails from email@example.com for the time period January 21, 2009, through February 1, 2013, reside on the server. Thus, there are no firstname.lastname@example.org e-mails from Secretary Clinton's tenure as secretary of state on the server for any review, even if such review were appropriate and legally authorized.’ ” (This begs the question as to just when the server was wiped clean and if there are any archived back-ups. If it's true, the server was wiped sometime between December 5, 2014 and March 27, 2015. As noted further at Hot Air, this means Hillary wiped clean over 31,000 e-mails from her server relating to her time as Secretary of State, claiming them to be personal. That's more documents than she produced. She would therefore have been sending over 21 personal emails a day per day while she served as Secretary of State.)

March 10, 2015 – Hillary Holds UN Press Conference About Her Emails(Washington Post) Hillary holds a UN press conference before mostly foreign journalists to talk about her e-mails. She says nothing about her server being wiped clean, mentioning only that she won't allow it to be inspected. She says she's complied with all relevant rules and that it was custom and practice to to so — a claim AP Fact Check contests the next day:
“I opted for convenience to use my personal email account, which was allowed by the State Department, because I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two.” (See the New York Daily News article showing Hillary bragging about managing three different email/electronic devices in her daily life)
“The vast majority of my work emails went to government employees at their government addresses, which meant they were captured and preserved immediately on the system at the State Department.” (That would not been the case with her assistant, Huma Abedin, nor her Chief of Staff, Cheryl Mills, both of whom likewise maintained email accounts on clintonemail.com. Nor would it be the case as regards correspondence outside of the State Department, such as to heads of state or Sydney Blumenthal)
“After I left office, the State Department asked former secretaries of state for our assistance in providing copies of work-related emails from our personal accounts. I responded right away and provided all my emails that could possibly be work-related, which totaled roughly 55,000 printed pages, even though I knew that the State Department already had the vast majority of them.”
QUESTION: Were you ever — were you ever specifically briefed on the security implications of using — using your own email server and using your personal address to email with the president?
CLINTON: I did not email any classified material to anyone on my email. There is no classified material... So I'm certainly well aware of the classification requirements and did not send classified material.

The old server was removed from the Clinton home by Platte River and stored in a third-party data center, which are set up to provide security from threats of hacking and natural disaster, [Barbara J.] Wells [a lawyer for Platte] said. Platte River Networks has retained control of the old server since it took over management of the Clintons' e-mail system. She said that the old server ‘was blank,’ and no longer contained useful data.”
February 1, 2013 – Hillary Follows No State Dept. Records Rules(National Review Online / National Review Online) Hillary resigns as Secretary of State. She follows no State Department Procedures for turning over records. She has never had the authority, under State Department regulations applicable to all employees, “including political appointees,” to decide for herself what is and isn't a government record in her e-mail records. Under State Department regulations, she is supposed to make a list of items she proposes to keep. A reviewing official then inspects both the list and the items. If they pass inspection, the official certifies that the removed or retained material doesn't “diminish the official records of the Department” or “violate confidentiality required by national security...”
