Blaming Guns for Murders is Like Blaming Forks for Obesity

America's Anchorman — Rush Limbaugh — said it: "Blaming guns for murder is like blaming forks for obesity..." and we couldn't agree more.

The subject was the shooting spree at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado last Friday, which left 12 people dead and 71 wounded.

"You note that nobody's calling for the banning of violent Hollywood movies or rap music. [Hollywood liberals are] too heavily invested in the Democrat party. Nobody's gonna call for the banning of comic books.

"What they will call for — they use this crisis to call for more gun control. Even though Colorado ... already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

"And the truth of the matter is that criminals and lunatics never have any problems breaking the laws. They never have any problems finding guns or explosives. The laws only stop other people from being able to defend themselves. Law only stops the law-abiding — by definition.

"Blaming guns for murder is like blaming forks for obesity. Someone misused a gun; therefore, no one's allowed to have one. This is what passes for logic among the left."

Liberals have again demonstrated their blindness when it comes to morality and the proper assignment of responsibility for peoples' bad behavior. Whether it's blaming cigarettes for lung cancer deaths instead of the people who choose to smoke them, or SUVs instead of their inattentive or intoxicated drivers — or guns instead of their law-breaking or mentally-ill users — liberals fixate obsessively on inanimate objects.

The inevitable result is an erosion of the rule of law in society, which leads inexorably to the expansion of big government and the proliferation of new laws, which only encumber those who are already law-abiding and have no effect on law-breakers.

The theater chain where the shooter wreaked havoc was a gun-free zone. This policy, more than anything else, ensured a high body count. No liberal calling for tighter gun laws has demonstrated how their imposition would have saved anybody from this atrocity. Had even a single gun-toting citizen been present, there's no telling how many lives would have been saved. Aside from the killer, liberal lawmakers have only themselves to blame for the loss of life.
