Why is President Obama
Such a Lucky Man?

With the political beating President Obama took during the debt-limit talks, you might wonder how anyone could see him as lucky in any way. Yet lucky he is, as radio talk show host Charles Payne explains quite convincingly (at roughly the 13-minute mark in his July 30 KFI broadcast):

Alright, GDP numbers. Gross Domestic Product. What's our economy doing? I gotta tell you. In some ways the President is very, very lucky, that this whole thing is dragging out, because it's taking peoples' attentions alway from just how awful, absolutely awful, the economy is. Last month, we created 18,000 jobs. 18,000 jobs. A nation of 300 million people. Canada created 28,000 jobs. A nation of 30 million people. It's embarrassing and pathetic...

Had the focus of news reports been on these truly dismal job numbers, the blame for them would have fallen squarely where it belongs: on the shoulders of the President. But because the negotiations over the debt ceiling were a national preoccupation – which allowed Obama and the Democrats to pressure and demagogue the Republicans – many people barely noticed.
