CNN Admits:
Obama Wiretapped
Trump Through Manafort

Ben Domenech at The Federalist asks some excellent questions about the explosive revelation by CNN that the Obama administration wire tapped President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

You'll recall that when President Trump accused Obama back in March of having him wiretapped, he was widely ridiculed by the media.

CNN's report is a bombshell, and it inspired Domenech to raise several questions of his own:

  1. When, exactly, was Paul Manafort wiretapped by the government?
  2. Did the wiretap stop when Manafort became Trump’s campaign chairman in March 2016 and did it resume after he stepped down from this role in August 2016 — or did it overlap?
  3. Was the FBI wiretap continuous before March 2016, i.e. before he had any official relationship with the Trump campaign, when he was talking regularly with Trump and living in Trump Tower?
  4. Since Manafort lived there, did the wiretap cover Trump Tower?
  5. When was the wiretap renewed? Who ordered the renewal, and what new justification was made?
  6. If the evidence from the conversations the government wiretapped were truly “not conclusive” about Trump's supposed collusion (as two sources tell CNN) why was the wiretap (presumably) renewed after Manafort left Trump's campaign? Was it targeting the same activities as before, or was it targeting new ones?
  7. The piece says that the wiretapping, which related to Manafort’s work in Ukraine, was “discontinued at some point last year for lack of evidence,” but that “The FBI then restarted the surveillance after obtaining a new FISA warrant that extended at least into early this year.” What evidence prompted the request for the new warrant?
  8. Was there anything that changed in the intervening time before the restart of the investigation other than the role Manafort played with the Trump campaign?
  9. How could it be possible for Donald Trump NOT to be picked up on the surveillance of Manafort if the two talked by phone regularly?
  10. Why are we just learning about this now? Who is the person leaking information — illegally — about a FISA court-based investigation? Who benefits from this report, and what is their motivation in releasing it to the public?
