This is financial analyst Mary Meeker's analysis of the financial condition of the United States.

Some points to think about:

• "Revenue" is dangerously smaller than "Expenses".

• Most of the expenses are entitlements, and so will be politically brutal to cut.

• As bad as these charts are, they aren't dynamic, and so do not show the true severity of the problem. There are no trend lines. If there were, we'd see the pie chart on the right increasing in size much faster than the one on the left.

• These charts prove without question that what we face is a spending problem. The United States can't "grow" out of this mess. At least not solely. It must cut.
